I would venture to say the entire idea
of a sonnet is a rather ridiculous thing.
The very thought of being boxed in a genre
is enough to make any creative man scream.
So try as one may to confine what they’re feeling
to the shackles of inhibiting rhythms and rhymes,
most will find themselves frantically fleeing
from the boundaries of these stifling 14 lines.
To the poetry instructors from every nation:
please attempt to grasp this. I’m trying so hard
to convey this emotion in strict rhythmic formation.
Can’t you see that these rules may as well just be bars!
And the truly ridiculous thing I must add;
Is that my sonnet is actually not half bad.

The Loudest Silence in Michigan

The loudest silence in Michigan
Throngs of people screaming with all their might
I can't be noticed by hearing or sight
This is the loudest silence in Michigan.
Yelling and taunting
Arrogant maize flaunting
This is the loudest silence in Michigan.
I am seen by millions throughout the nation
But I remain an invisible part of this invasion
This is the loudest silence in Michigan.
Where a hundred thousand become none
For a few hours a week, then we are done
This is the loudest silence in Michigan.
Simply an unbearable din
Bonded together by its desire to win
This is the loudest silence in Michigan.
It descends upon the enemy
Inundating them with hostility.
The loudest silence in Michigan.
But no matter what's done
The hundred thousand are none
And it's simply
The loudest silence in Michigan.
